LOOKING BACK TO MOVE FORWARD.

Thursday, April 28, 2011

The other day while wandering around Central Square in Cambridge, I kept coming across such wonderful street art. I love how these artists contribute to the scenery of the city. The art feels fleeting, and creates a serendipitous moment that could have otherwise gone unnoted.

One piece that really caught my eye, In Retrospect (third below), featured a girl holding a sign that said, "Sometimes, you need to look back to move forward..." The simplicity of the piece was in such perfect contrast with the bright color and motion of the others in the collection.

WORDS AND MEANING (4).

Where on earth did April go? This month has been absolutely flying by. I can't seem to keep up! The semester is coming to an end, and things have been pretty crazy lately. The last couple of days have been absolutely beautiful here in Boston, and it's killing me that I can't go out and enjoy them. Oh well -- only a few more days until I'm done.

On a somewhat calmer note, here is my last selection for National Poetry Month, from Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself". These words always remind me to slow down and be aware of the present.

IN BLOOM.

Happy Earth Day! How will you be celebrating? Over at the Earth Day Network, you can Pledge an Act of Green. I pledge to be better about recycling, be more inventive in terms of reusing and upcycling products,  and spend more time appreciating the beauty of nature. [I'll also be taking advantage of some Earth Day offers, like free coffee at Starbucks!]

For me, the most delightful part of spring has always been getting to see the pretty flowers. The past couple of weeks, the city has been transformed, the bare branches of winter slowly being replaced with a little color. Today, I'm going to take time to enjoy the pretty touches of spring.

DOWN BY THE WATER.

Walking along the Charles as the sun goes down is one of the most lovely ways to end an afternoon. With summer approaching, I plan on spending many an evening walking, reading, people watching, and taking in the views by the water.

In celebration of National Poetry Month, I would like to share some of my favorite lines of poetry in a four-part series. Check back next Wednesday for the final selection.

I WANT TO RIDE MY BICYCLE.

Tuesday, April 19, 2011

Now that the weather is getting nicer, [It's actually raining as I write this, but a girl can dream, right?] bicycles are returning to Boston in abundance. Much easier -- and probably safer -- than taking the T, bikes are a great way to get around the city.

THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL.

The other day I was walking around Central Square in Cambridge, and I came across this fantastic little alley. One side of the alley was covered with artistic graffiti and the other with a photo collage of Central Square. The best part was the colored glass awning that produced the most amazing shadows. The colors were absolutely stunning; I could have taken pictures for hours. It's places like these that really bring heart + soul to a city.
