INSPIRED BY :: THE EDGE OF LOVE

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

I had so much fun creating this guest post that I thought I would start a new little series, showcasing things that have been inspiring me lately. The other day, I watched The Edge of Love and was completely captivated. The film was set during WWII, and focused on the lives of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, his wife Caitlin, and his childhood sweetheart Vera. Every scene was beautifully shot, and I couldn't help but be inspired. The clothing and color palettes gorgeous, and the lovely scenery made me even more excited for my trip to England and Wales this summer.

Don't you just love hats? I love how a simple hat with a black ribbon perfectly completes these two lovely ladies' outfits, worn decades apart. That Coco Chanel sure knew what she was doing. Hats always seem to add such a wonderful sense of glamour and mystery. I'd love to know, do you wear hats? I absolutely adore hats, but feel a little silly wearing them sometimes. I think this is a look that I may just have to try.

A lovely look at a café in Vienna

A dreamy collection of watery photos.

A thought-provoking piece on the beauty of contradiction.

I love this Mad Men round-up. I am SO excited for its return.

THE ICA :: I had so much fun on this blogger date at the ICA.

SPRING FEVER! :: Spring arrived early in Boston this year, and I couldn't be happier.

COLOR THEORY // 12 :: I just love this combination of cherry blossom pink, slate, and tree bark.

what     //  Cherry blossom pink and shades of slate and tree bark

where  //   A springtime walk by the Charles

why     //    As I mentioned yesterday, I have a serious case of spring fever. All of the trees are blossoming around Boston, and I couldn't be more excited. Yesterday, I went for a walk by the Charles and couldn't resist taking about a million pictures of the beautiful flowers. [ coming up next week! ] I was instantly drawn to this combination of pale cherry blossom, blush pink, slate, and tree bark. The delicate pinks are perfectly tempered by the cool grays and browns.

SPRING FEVER!

I most definitely have a case of spring fever right now!

THE ICA.

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

Last Thursday, some lovely fellow bloggers and I went to the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston. I've had the ICA on my must-see list for years, so I was excited to finally check it out. Located in Boston's Fort Point neighborhood, the ICA overlooks the water and has some seriously beautiful views.   Anything near the ocean is fine by me! Although it was a rather gray day, the light was soft and gorgeous and I couldn't resist taking a few shots. The building itself is absolutely stunning, especially at night. The lights  looked so pretty reflected on the water. While all of the exhibits may not have been to my taste, I had a wonderful time catching up with these lovely ladies [ Emily, Smita, Anna, Clair, Melanie, Danielle, and Aubrie ] and it was well worth the trip.

[ PS...You can see some gorgeous ICA pics over at Hogger & Co and Dear Friend! ]

As you may have realized, I'm fairly obsessed with color [ as evidenced here & here ]. A selection of bright and cheery colors never fails to inspire me. The funny thing is, I find myself sticking to more neutral colors in my wardrobe. I color-code my closet, and its pretty much divided into three sections: black, grey, and cream. Sigh, I'm so boring, you guys! Anyway, the colors in the image on the right by Norman Parkinson definitely caught my attention. The pink tones and exotic location have me dying to pack my bags and go somewhere warm. If you're looking for something to do this afternoon, I highly recommend browsing through the Norman Parkinson Archive. Such a stunning collection.

I hope you're enjoying your weekend!

Inspiration to jump off the sure-thing boat

what     //  Shades of indigo, feather grey, and rust

where  //   Provincetown, MA

why     //    Provincetown is nothing if not colorful, but this warn old mailbox still managed to catch my eye. The tones of indigo and rust, along with the gold seal, gave the mailbox a thoroughly regal feel. I love seeing the little ways that people add color to their lives. I live in an apartment building and share a mailbox, but I would love to decorate it and add a little color.  Don't you think it would make a fun DIY project

LOVE!

Wednesday, March 7, 2012

I bought this book by Chilean poet Pablo Neruda at Anthropologie a few years back on a whim, mainly because the cover is so darn pretty. [ insert pun about judging a book by its cover...have I told you guys how much I love corny puns? ]  I've always loved poetry, but sometimes find it hard to read more than a little at a time. With this book, it was different. I devoured the entire thing in one sitting, and have reread it several times since. Neruda speaks so eloquently of love, saying things I feel but couldn't adequately express. When I read his words, I am completely captivated, astonished that the language I use everyday could sound quite so beautiful.

The blogging world makes me feel a similar way. I am constantly amazed at the incredible talent and creativity out there. It's almost overwhelming at times. [ I'm talking about you, Pinterest! ] People like this are a constant source of inspiration, and I feel so lucky that my little blog and I get to be a part of it all.

Where do you find inspiration? I'd love to hear!

LOVING LATELY // 15

Monday, March 5, 2012

I have a whole wonderful week off for spring break, and while it's not in my budget to go on a trip, I plan on making the most of it. I'll be spending time reading, both new books and old favorites like this worn old copy of Jane Austen's Emma. When I'm taking classes, I never seem to have enough time to read books for fun, so this is pretty exciting. I also have a few creative projects planned -- I'm going to rework some broken old necklaces to make something new & pretty, and tackle some of the many DIY projects I have pinned on Pinterest. [ Follow @hemenwaystreet on Instagram for project updates! ] And of course, I'll be going for lots of walks on the beach. All in all, I think I have a pretty fun week planned.

Today, I'm linking up with Anna for Much Love Monday. Check out her blog & join in the fun!

Can you guys tell I'm totally having Downton Abbey withdrawals? This shot of Lady Mary is absolutely stunning. The darkness of her horse and coat contrasted with the misty background and pop of red is just gorgeous. The lovely Portrait of Lady Barbara Lowther on Horseback by Alfred James Munnings--commissioned in 1919--felt like it could have been a scene right out of Downton Abbey.

A beautiful sketch with brightly colored confetti.

A gorgeous look at the locations behind period dramas

Beautiful words about happiness

Lovely ladies wearing headscarves

LOVING LATELY // 14 :: Walks by the Charles River.

THE DETAILS // 11 :: Pretty architectural details.

A LEAP IN THE DARK :: Inspiring words about growth.

ST. DAVID'S DAY :: In honor of my Welsh heritage.

what     //  Shades of sandstone and sky blue

where  //   A sunny afternoon by the Boston Public Library

why     //    In the summer, I love to sit outside in the courtyard at the Boston Public Library with a good book and an iced coffee. The other day, it was warmer than it had been for a while, and I took advantage of the nice weather and spent a while reading in the beautiful courtyard. The sand-colored buildings of the library looked so beautiful with the pale blue tones of the sky.

ST. DAVID'S DAY.

Thursday, March 1, 2012

Can you believe it's March already? The first few months of the year have absolutely flown by. Today is St. David's Day, and being half Welsh, I thought I should commemorate it with a daffodil. I have a whole glorious ten days off starting tomorrow, and I couldn't be more excited. I'll be spending time at my parent's house, and I'm so excited to relax and enjoy some of my Mom's homemade Welsh cakes.
